Product Line Master
Product Line Master - User Guide
1. Introduction đ
The Product Line Master is the highest level of classification in the manufacturing module. It is used to group similar products and manufacturing processes into logical “families” or “segments” (e.g., “Automotive Components,” “Industrial Valves,” “Hydraulic Pumps”).
Strategic Role of Product Lines:
- Organizational Structure: Keep your engineering and production data organized by logical segments.
- Efficient Filtering: Dramatically speed up search and selection in Bill of Materials (BOM) and Processes.
- Executive Reporting: Provide high-level insights into which business segments are most active.
2. Getting Started đ
Accessing the Module
Navigate to Manufacturing Setup > Product Line Master.
Creating a Product Line
A product line record is intentionally streamlined:
- Product Line Name: A broad category name that represents a grouping of your products.
- Product Line ID: A unique 2-digit code automatically assigned by the system.
3. Key Features â¨
đˇī¸ Simplified Indexing
By categorizing your factory data into Product Lines, you avoid having to scroll through thousands of irrelevant records when performing daily tasks.
đĄī¸ System Capacity
The master supports a maximum of 99 unique product lines, ensuring that the top-level categorization remains clean and manageable.
4. Usage Across Modules & Transactions đ
The Product Line Master acts as a parent to other manufacturing configurations:
âī¸ Process Master
Every manufacturing process (e.g., Welding, Painting, Assembly) is pinned to a Product Line. This ensures that when you are setting up a production route for an Automotive part, you aren’t accidentally shown processes meant for Electronics.
đ Bill of Materials (BOM)
The BOM is the core technical document for any product. Every BOM is linked to a Product Line, which serves as the primary filter for engineers and production planners.
5. Related Reports đ
đ BOM Reports
- Navigation: Manufacturing > Reports > BOM Reports
- Excel Output:
BOM_List.xlsx - Usage: Use the Product Line filter to generate a complete inventory of all manufacturing standards for a specific business segment.
đ Production Analysis
While not a direct report, many production summaries allow you to group your manufacturing output (quantity and value) by Product Line to see which segments are driving your factory’s performance.
6. Guidelines and Logic â ī¸
Entry Standards
- Broad Categories: Use names that represent groups of products rather than individual items.
- Consistency: The system automatically converts all names to UPPERCASE (e.g., “electronics” becomes “ELECTRONICS”) to maintain professional document standards.
7. Deletion & Modification Preventions đĄī¸
Because it sits at the top of the manufacturing hierarchy, the Product Line Master has strong data integrity protections:
đĢ Deletion Preventions
You cannot delete a Product Line if:
- One or more Manufacturing Processes are linked to it.
- One or more Bill of Materials (BOM) records are categorized under it. The system protects your engineering structure by ensuring no “parent” category is removed while its “children” (processes/BOMs) still exist.
âī¸ Modification Rules
- Permanent IDs: The 2-digit Product Line ID is a permanent record and cannot be changed once created.
- Name Refinement: You can update the Category Name (e.g., changing “VALVES” to “INDUSTRIAL VALVES”), and the change will instantly update the labels across all associated processes and reports.
8. Best Practices / Tips đĄ
- Think Big Picture: Think of Product Lines as your business departments or market segments.
- Streamline Selection: If you have 500 processes, grouping them into 5 Product Lines makes the selection dropdowns in the BOM module much faster to use.
- Keep it Clean: Periodically review your Product Lines to ensure they still align with your current business structure.
